Birmingham, AL June 24, 2012 Josh Hayes escaped from the rest of the field and ran his own race all the way to victory, and his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammate Josh Herrin escaped near disaster in an off-track excursion, only to fight back to the front in an epic battle for second place, finally settling for third in today’s AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike race at Barber Motorsports Park.

In a race that looked like it would be a repeat of yesterday’s result, the two Josh’s were up front and riding in tandem again, until the turn known as “Charlotte’s Web” snared Josh Herrin. He kept the bike upright and was able to rejoin the field in 9th place where he commenced to quickly passing riders and moving back towards the front.

Meanwhile, things were going to plan for race leader and two-time defending SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes, aboard his #1 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R1. With clocklike precision, he ran lap after lap in nearly identical fashion and kept himself safely clear of the rest of the field of riders. It was the eighth SuperBike victory of the year for Josh and the 25th of his remarkable career.

“It was a good day. I got a decent start, although not quite as good as my teammate (who got the holeshot),” Josh mused. “We were close together, and I was able to get around Josh and get back to my game plan. I rode a very safe race, and my R1 is able to let me do that and stretch out my lead. I’ve been four years with the same crew, and I’ve got a great bike under me. We’ve got the momentum, and I want to keep it going.”

Josh earned another bonus point for leading the most laps, which, like yesterday, were all the laps in the race. He now leads his third SuperBike Championship by 37 points.

After Josh Herrin’s eventful race, he said, “I made way too many mistakes in the race today but, luckily, I was able to recover from it and get myself back up with Blake, so that was a plus.”

Today’s third-place finish was Josh Herrin’s seventh podium of the season, and he sits solidly in third place in the season points standings.

The Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team will race next at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 13-15 for Round 7 of the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Championship.
