(Daytona, FL) Arai Helmets will field its biggest-ever group of NASCAR drivers and AMA Pro Racing motorcycle racers for both of the upcoming Daytona racing events: the Daytona 500 on February 26, and Bike Week racing a couple weeks later, March 15th to 17th.

The company said its NASCAR driver lineup, that began with just a couple drivers choosing its helmet, has turned into “an avalanche of drivers,” according to Arai’s Jeff Weil. “We had a few of the top Sprint Cup guys like Jeff Gordon for a while, and we’ve won a couple 500s with Gordon and Jamie McMurray. Then, in just the last year or so, it’s gotten nuts.” Weil said Arai now has 11 Sprint Cup drivers, three in the Nationwide Series, and two in the Camping World Truck Series where Arai has the current champion, Austin Dillon, who moved to the Nationwide Series for 2012.

On the Bike Week motorcycle side, Arai’s AMA Pro field is equally strong. It’s highlighted by two current road race champions, Josh Hayes in Superbike, and Danny Eslick in Daytona SportBike, plus perennial contenders and former champions like Blake Young, Martin Cardenas, and Jason DiSalvo. For the Daytona Short Track races, Arai’s very-deep field will be led by two more current champions: Jake Johnson, GNC national champion, and Michael Martin in Pro Singles.

“Between these two powerhouse line-ups, Arai could have an amazing Daytona, even though we know full well that racing’s completely unpredictable,” Weil added. “Put this potential together with Arai’s claiming our fifth of the last seven Formula 1 world championships with Sebastian Vettel, and another IndyCar championship with Dario Franchitti, and you can’t blame us for being a little pumped up—especially for such a comparatively small helmet company.”

Irvine, Calif. – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson both took wins during Saturday night’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Leaving California, both riders sit atop the points standings in their respective classes. Villopoto led the final 19 laps of the main event, despite a late race threat that saw him battle for the lead as he came to the white flag. After running away from the field in his heat race, Wilson nearly pulled the holeshot, took control early and led every lap of the supercross lites main event. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer started the main event in third position, but after going down twice, he finished 20th. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle put together a great ride in his heat race, but he too suffered a string of crashes in the main and ended the night in 18th.

Having Fun
coming into San Diego, Calif., and get his swagger back. Relaxed and carefree, he came out in the heat race and rode flawlessly on his KX(tm)250F, crossing the finish line well ahead of second place on the short, slippery track. When the gate dropped for the main event, Wilson rounded the first corner in third and quickly moved into the lead through the treacherous whoops. Wilson would lead all 15 laps of the supercross lites main event and take over the points lead after many top contenders finished outside the top-10.

“The night went brilliant!” said Wilson. “This week I tried not to put pressure on myself to win and instead just go out and have fun. That’s what it’s all about and what made the difference tonight.”

The Checklist
After walking the track Saturday morning, it was evident the track at Qualcomm Stadium’s dirt and layout would play into that evening’s results. In the heat race, Villopoto discovered that the two passing spots on the sub-50 second track would be the whoops and the corner before the finish line jump. Rounding the first lap of the main event, Villopoto sat in second and wasted no time making his move into the lead, passing the leader before the finish line. He would click off consistent laps until lapped traffic started to hold Villopoto back. This allowed second place to briefly get by for the lead, but Villopoto would again use the corner before the finish to retake the lead and take the checkered flag.

“You really had to be smooth every lap to pass lappers and race for the lead,” said Villopoto. “San Diego’s dirt is really slippery and the whoops were long and cupped out. Most tracks we don’t even think twice about hitting them wide open, but these you really had to think about going into them steady and smooth. I’ve never won San Diego in the supercross class so it feels great to check this off.”

High Expectations
As reigning Supercross Lites West Region Champion, Tickle knows what’s needed for a rider to be at the front of the field. Although it is his first year in the supercross class abroad a KX(tm)450F, Tickle knows where he belongs and will not be content until he gets there. He fell in the first corner during the heat race and he had to charge hard to make it directly to the main event. Sitting 11th on the last lap, Tickle got a clean run through the deteriorating whoops and was able to pass two riders moving him into a transfer position to the main event. That would be the high point of his night however, as acrash on lap four put him a lap behind early in the race. He finished 18th on the night.

“I felt like I was hitting my lines really good, and was strong in the whoops,” said Tickle. “In the main, I didn’t get the start I wanted and made the mistake of not getting by riders as soon as possible. Starting in the back of field only leads to more problems so my starts need to improve for me to ride where I belong.”

The Long Way
Most top riders are able to transfer directly to the main event and don’t have to worry about the LCQ. Unfortunately for Weimer, while coming through the pack in his heat race he jumped off the track and lost a lot of time finding a safe place to re-enter the course. Weimer was forced to line up for the last chance qualifier, where he easily took the win. Although having to start on the way outside gate, Weimer nearly pulled the holeshot and was battling for the lead on the first lap. Three laps later, he found himself on the ground and was forced to pull off the track.

“The night was wild,” said Weimer. “It’s frustrating that it looked like I could have had a good result even coming from the LCQ, but that all went downhill quickly.”

Despite his bad result, Weimer holds seventh overall in the points standings and is only six points back from fifth place.

East Bound and Down
Monster Energy AMA Supercross heads to the east coast next weekend to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Supercross Lites East Region will kick off with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett and Darryn Durham fighting to see who can get the first win in the east.

Honda had a successful night on the podium with TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda racing’s Cole Seely both capturing second place in the Supercross and Lites classes.

Team Honda Muscle Milk rider Justin Brayton showed impressive strength Saturday night after coming back from a bad crash in qualifying to finish sixth overall in the main. After going down hard in the second qualifying practice it was uncertain if Brayton would be able to ride the rest of the night. Following some rest and an evaluation from the Asterisk medical team, the decision was made to ride. Brayton finished a solid fifth in his heat race. In the main, he grabbed a mid-pack start and battled his way through the entire 20 laps to a sixth-place overall finish.

TwoTwo Motorsports rider Chad Reed made his fifth podium appearance for the season with a second-place finish. Following a less-than-desirable start in his heat, Reed was given a second chance after the race was red flagged due to a crash. In the second start he was able to grab the holeshot and gap the rest of the pack for the win. During the main Reed got a third-place start but quickly made the pass for second. He spent the rest of the 20 laps charging at the front, battling with the rider in first up until the last lap.

GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham had a disappointing end to his night after riding strong all day. After posting the fourth-quickest qualifying time of the night, Windham rode a solid heat race, finishing in fifth place. During the main he got a mid-pack start but charged to fourth before going down in the whoops in the closing stages of the race. He was able to get up and finish the race in 16th position.

“The track was pretty difficult. The whoops ate a lot of people in the main and unfortunately I was one of them,” said Windham. “I felt good the first 17 laps and the GEICO Honda was running great, which makes me feel confident that I am inching closer and closer to the podium. It is frustrating, though, having such a good ride and then making one mistake that puts you on the ground. I am looking forward to next weekend and heading East.”

Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda’s Cole Seely made his way to the podium for a second consecutive week with a second-place finish in the Lites main. Seely started the night out strong, taking the win in his heat, followed by teammate Travis Baker. In the main, Seely nabbed a third-place start but quickly made the pass for second where he stayed the rest of the 20-lap race. “The night went really well for me,” said Seely. “I am happy with a podium heading into the break, as well as sitting way better in points.”

After winning three Lites races in a row and taking the points lead, GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac had an unfortunate night in San Diego. He crashed hard in the long whoop section during the main, preventing him from finishing the race and robbing him of his championship points lead. Heading into the break, Tomac now sits in second place in the Lites West championship by a mere two points.

Team Suzuki Press Office – February 13.

John Hopkins has broken a bone in his right hand after suffering a corner-entry high-side crash on the first day of testing at Phillip Island in Australia today.

The Crescent Fixi Suzuki rider will fly back to USA tomorrow morning and see his hand surgeon immediately, before deciding if he will be able to return to Australia and race at the opening round of the World Superbike Championship on February 26th.

John Hopkins:

“This feels so devastating because I was feeling really comfortable on the bike right from the start. I was running the 2011-spec bike with just small modifications to the engine and the new Yoshimura exhaust and hadn’t yet got on the full 2012 bike. But I felt that the GSX-R had already been improved in the areas it needed to be.

“The track conditions were not the best and we started the day a bit late because there were some damp patches around from the overnight rain. Having said that, it wasn’t the damp that caused the crash. I was on a used tyre and probably on the last lap before pulling in. I exited turn one and might have been just a little bit too hot for the condition of the tyre going into turn two, when suddenly the rear came round even before I got on the brakes. I was spat off and unfortunately came down on my right hand – the same one that is missing a bit of finger. The X-rays show that I have fractured a bone in the base of the hand near what’s left of my fourth finger.

“I will fly home tomorrow and see my hand surgeon, Doctor Chao, and we’ll decide what has to be done. I would say that my chances of racing at Phillip Island next week are very slim, but the important thing is to get the hand sorted correctly and be completely right before I race. It may be better to miss Phillip Island and then use the six weeks or so before Imola to get back to 100% – we’ll see. I want to say thanks to the Crescent Fixi team for all its efforts and sorry to Suzuki and all the team’s sponsors – we’ll be back and fighting for the podium soon”

Jack Valentine:

“It is a bit more than unfortunate what happened to John today. We had a late start because of the overnight rain and a bit of sea mist this morning, but everything was going fine. John looked good on the bike. His lap times were right up there with the others and there were no problems with his finger. He was unlucky to high-side, but more unlucky to come down on his right hand. We’ll wait to see how he gets on in the USA tomorrow and although there is a possibility that he might race, I think we’d all rather that he got his injury sorted out properly and then return when he’s full and ready.

“The positives are that both riders have already gelled really well with the bike. Hopper looked good right from the start and Leon got comfortable straight away. Leon ended the day really happy with the bike and he’ll carry on the work we’ve got to do and keep improving tomorrow.”

The Swan Yamaha team has today (Monday) confirmed that World Superbike sensation Noriyuki Haga will be completing their line-up for the 2012 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship as he permanently replaces the injured Ian Hutchinson for the forthcoming season.

Fans’ favourite Haga is famous for his flamboyant riding style with much of his World Championship success in the past powered by Yamaha. Japanese ace Haga joins the MCE BSB Championship with the Swan Yamaha team following a record of 43 race wins in the World Championship, finishing runner-up in the title race on three occasions (2009, 2007, 2000) and securing third in the overall standings in an additional four seasons (2008, 2006, 2005, 2004).

Haga has already celebrated success on MCE BSB Championship circuits at World level including podium finishes at Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Silverstone and Assen as the Japanese contender prepares for his first full season in MCE BSB which gets underway at Brands Hatch on Easter weekend (6-9 April).

Haga said: “It is a new challenge for me to race in BSB and I am now ready for the new season with Swan Yamaha. I feel that after many years in the same series this will be a kind of restart to my racing career. BSB has grown a lot and I have big support from the fans in the UK, so I liked the idea of racing in the Championship. It will also be a return to Yamaha, where I spent so many years taking many wins and now I feel like I am going back to my family. I have won races with Yamaha before in the World Championship and now I hope that we can do it again in BSB. I don’t know several circuits in England and the BSB Championship but I will do my best to get results this year for the fans, myself and for Yamaha. We will start testing soon and I am very excited to get back on track as we have big ambitions for this season. Finally I hope that Ian Hutchinson can recover soon from his injury.”

Team Owner Shaun Muir concluded: “It was a difficult situation for the Swan Yamaha team when Ian (Hutchinson) was sidelined with just four weeks remaining before we begin our pre-season testing programme. We then had to set out to find a replacement rider and the result for us could not have been better. We are absolutely delighted that Noriyuki will be joining us and we are now looking forward to welcoming him into the team. Noriyuki has such vast experience of racing a Superbike and during his career has always had a strong partnership with Yamaha and we are happy that we can continue that relationship this year. The Swan Yamaha team won the title last season and Noriyuki is really ready for the challenge of BSB and is coming to race here to win.”

Swan Marketing Manager Mark Alldred concluded: “We are thrilled to confirm the full team line up for the 2012 season after Ian’s unfortunate injury. We are delighted to welcome Noriyuki Haga to the team at this late stage. He has a fantastic pedigree at the highest level and will be a real contender for the championship this year. We have a great rider line-up at Swan Yamaha having signed two of the top riders in the championship. We wish them both the best of luck for the forthcoming season.”

SAN DIEGO, California – Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey put his KTM back on the podium at the sixth round of the AMA Supercross Series held during perfect weather at Qualcomm Stadium to register his fifth podium. He is currently third in the season’s standings and trails leader Ryan Villipoto by just 10 points.

Dungey was placed in the second SX class heat where the first attempt red flagged after three laps. He dug in and went on to finish third after the restart.

He got away well in the main event to be top five around the first corner but then made a small mistake in the first rhythm section and fell back to fifth. He sat it out there until lap seven but when James Stewart went down he advanced to fourth then made a quick pass on Brett Metcalfe. He then maintained third place right up to the flag.

“I struggled a little bit tonight in some sections and it held me back from fighting for the top spot. Overall, I am glad I was able to get on the podium and salvage some points but I need to battle for the win to help my fight in the championship chase. I am looking forward to heading east and hoping to run up front next weekend,” Dung

ey said after the race.

In the Lites it was also a good night for Australia’s JDR/JSTAR/KTM rider Matt Moss of Australia who also finished third to grab his first podium. However not so lucky was Dungey’s Red Bull KTM factory teammate Marvin Musquin who did well to survive a nasty first round crash in the main event to salvage points. He is currently fourth in the season’s standings.

Musquin impressed the sizeable crowd in his heat race earlier in the day where he earned a great jump off the start o finish second and easily secure a top spot in the main event. But he got pushed back at the start, was seventh at the first cover and was heading for top five when he came unstuck in the back rhythm section. Musquin fell hard and took a moment to recover, then returned to the mechanics area to make some adjustments before rejoining the action a lap down on the rest of the field. He quickly set to work to try and pick off any riders he could and did well to finish eventual sixteenth.

“This is definitely a disappointing race because I lost a lo

t of points toward the championship. The good thing is I walked away uninjured and will not be set back at all from my crash. I plan to race a few east coast rounds on the KTM 350 SX-F and I am looking forward to those races and mixing it up with a new class of riders,” stated Musquin after the race.

Musquin has confirmed that he will race both the St. Louis and Daytona Supercross races in the premier class riding a KTM 350 SX-F and possibly one other round as well.

JGRMX Yamaha’s James Stewart missed out on another podium finish at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego last Saturday when the former champion crashed through the tricky whoops section of the course that entertained round six of seventeen in the AMA Supercross series (also an FIM World Championship).

Stewart recovered from a mid-pack start in the 20 lap main event to make several sharp overtaking moves and force his way to third place. It was on the sixth circulation when the slip occurred, and a crowd of 58, 782 spectators saw the Floridian hit the ground luckily without injury. Stewart was actually able to remount and although a lap down reached the flag in fifteenth for a few points.

“We had a good practice and I had an OK start in the main – top ten somewhere – I made my way up and got into third place and ended up going down in the whoops,” he recounted after the final Californian stop on the calendar. “I don’t know what happened, I was just riding and doing my thing. I was on my head so quick. I was stuck under the bike – completely stuck on something. I was trying to pull it off, and finally a guy pulled his knife out and cut me out and I got going. A little bit frustrating but we will go back and keep on working. I appreciate all the fans sticking behind us. We’ve got a lot of races left so we will continue getting better.”

Reigning Champion Ryan Villopoto rode to his second win in succession and heads the standings. Stewart is fourth and 32 points in arrears.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Zach Osborne may have left the West Coast Lites competition but Yamaha were well represented at the Qualcomm by Star Valli Yamaha’s Gareth Swanepoel. The former Grand Prix racer took his YZ250F to a career-best fourth position. In what is his first full season of SX racing the South African classified just in front of team-mate Nico Izzi. “Supercross is a whole different ball game and I’ve been trying to find my feet but tonight I proved to myself that I can run the pace for a full 15 laps,” he said. “The whoops were really gnarly but I used them to my advantage and could hit them consistently each lap.”

“My goal is to finish the West coast series healthy so that I can go into the MX season strong,” he added. “A podium finish in the SX Lites would be awesome and that has to be the next step.”

Round seven of the series (and the first outing for the East Coast Lites campaigners) will take place at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas next Saturday.

Fellow GEICO Honda riders Kevin Windham also had a tough outing, finishing 16th in Supercross, while fill-in rider Gavin Faith posted a career-best sixth place result.

Tomac’s last-place finish coupled with Dean Wilson’s victory resulted in a stunning change at the top of the standings, with Tomac dropping behind Wilson by two points. There are three races left on the Supercross Lites West schedule with the next one coming April 21 in Seattle.

“We’ve made (the championship chase) interesting, which is something we didn’t want to do, but we’ve got plenty of time to recover and rest now so that’s what we’ll do,” Tomac said. “We’ll reload and get ready for the last three races. I’m not going to change anything I’ve been doing because it’s been a great season so far. We just had some unfortunate luck tonight.”

Tomac’s woes started in the first heat race when he had a collision with a lower-ranked rider. That forced him well back in the pack and he had to fight hard just to qualify for the Main. Unfortunately, his eighth-place heat finish gave him a less-than-desirable gate pick for the Main and once again he found himself in a fight for every position.

Even so, Tomac rounded the first turn in sixth place, and had reached third place by Lap 7. But an off-kilter run through the whoops was his undoing, and the ensuing solo wreck left him battered and unable to continue.

“I feel like I got run over by a truck,” Tomac said. “I missed the front wheel in the first part of the whoops and it did the huck-and-buck on me. I went down and the bike came down on top of me. I tried to get up and continue but the bike wouldn’t start.

“It’s a bummer because I could see the two guys in front of me and the race still had a long way to go so it could have been good there at the end. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

The whoops section also tripped up Windham, who was running a lofty fourth before wiping out in almost the same spot that claimed Tomac. As he struggled to catch his breath and finish the final three laps he fell back to 16th place.

“I thought we had great chance at a podium finish,” Windham said. “Those whoops were just killer though. There’s no point in having a section of whoops like that where so many riders were taken out of the race. The fans don’t want that.

“At least we stayed fifth in the points because Bubba (fourth-place rider James Stewart) wrecked in the whoops also. It’s a disappointing finish though.”

Faith was moderately pleased with his sixth-place finish. This event marked his last with the GEICO Honda team, with Wil Hahn expected to return before the next West race.

“I could have pushed it a little more but I got arm-pump and decided to just ride it out,” Faith said. “These four races with the GEICO Honda team have been great. It’s a first-class group and they treated me so well. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.”

TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed has finished second at Round 6 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium tonight.

The Australian, who led his heat race from start to finish didn’t get a great start in the ‘Main Event’ but charged through the field and into second place on Lap 3 of the 20-lap contest.

As the race unfolded, Reed began to close in on race leader Ryan Villopoto and after a bar-to-bar battle with his rival, he moved into lead on Lap 18.

An aggressive Villopoto block pass saw Reed relinquish the lead on the final lap, the Honda rider happy to take second place after a solid 20-lap duel.

“I am really happy that I rode 20 solid laps tonight,” Reed said.

“Ryan (Villopoto) started to gap me on laps 9 – 11 and I found myself being lazy in the turns.

“He races for it on every inch of the racetrack so I said to myself quit being lazy and get out there and fight for this thing,” he continued.

“I was able to get back on him and make a pass but he was real aggressive and made a pass back. I have to be a little more aggressive and make things happen

“The changes that we have made through these West Coast events have been good. I am excited to be heading back to Florida with a good solid 20 lap race under my belt,” Reed added.

Reed will now return to his Florida base and prepare for Round 7 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, the first of the East Coast events, at Arlington’s Cowboys Stadium on Saturday February 18.

Save the Recreational Trails Program

Take Action!
Email or Call your U.S. Senators Today!

The U.S. Senate is set to consider an amendment that could save the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is offering the amendment to revise the Senate transportation bill entitled “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century,” or MAP-21.

The current draft of MAP-21 would essentially destroy the RTP by eliminating its dedicated funding source. This amendment is necessary to restore the RTP.

The RTP was created on a bipartisan basis in 1991 to provide funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. Funds for the RTP come from taxes generated by fuel used for off-highway vehicle recreation — by snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-highway light trucks.

Please urge your senators to cosponsor the Klobuchar amendment to save the RTP in MAP-21. A prewritten email is available for you to send to your senators immediately by following the “Take Action” option and entering your information. If you would like to call your senators, click here.

Buffalo, NY: Dunlop is pleased to announce that in 2012 it will once again support club racers throughout the United States by posting more than $1 million dollars in available contingency payouts throughout a wide variety of racing classes conducted by 17 popular sanctioning organizations. As the official tire of the AMA Pro Road Racing series, Australian National SuperBike Championship, Australian FX Series and more, Dunlop in 2012 will make available to club racers an expanded selection of products, including DOT tires and slicks made in the U.S. and U.K., along with professional services at the track. Direct technical assistance from the Dunlop U.S. R&D team will be available at select club races where work with the ongoing road race tire development program will take place.

Detailed information regarding the 2012 Dunlop contingency program, tire availability and prices are available at Dunlopracing.com or by calling Race Tire Service at 800-772-8473. Also, be sure to check out the special price page.

Dunlop Senior Road Race Manager Sabastian Mincone said, “Club racing, like AMA Pro Road Racing, has always been an important program for Dunlop. Over the years, this program has allowed us to work with some of most talented riders in America, and to develop race-winning products that work remarkably well at race tracks all around the United States. All of us at Dunlop are pleased to offer contingency awards plus our technical support for the many club racers around the country to help grow racing at the grass-roots level, and we also understand the difficulties involved with racing in today’s economy. In 2012 we will intensify our development of U.S.-made race products in order to deliver top performance at an affordable price. Witness the 2011 WERA championship won by BEI Racing on new Dunlop KR448F and KR449 slick tires made in the USA. Dunlop also recently rolled out a new profile 190/60ZR17 D211GP-A with MT Multi Tread™ and NTEC technologies in several compounds. Dunlop will also continue to offer our full range of UK-made road race tires for 2012.”

The KTM/HMC Superbike Racing Team competed at three of the AMA Pro Superbike Road Racing Championship Series events last season and will return for the entire series for 2012. The team will be headed by HMC Racing owner, Mitch Hansen, and will be taken to the track by Chris Fillmore.

The famous duo, Hansen and Fillmore, both have an extensive history with the KTM brand. Hansen led the HMC/KTM Supermoto Team to 10 National Championships from 2003-2009 and was also the face behind the U.S. Red Bull Rookies Cup effort from 2008-2009. Fillmore raced for the HMC/KTM Supermoto Team at the young age of sixteen in 2003 and again in 2008 where he finished 2nd overall in the AMA Pro Supermoto Championship while also competing on the KTM 990 Super Duke in select events.

The two paired up last season during the final few AMA Pro Superbike Road Racing events and earned the KTM 1190 RC8 R Race Spec bike its best Superbike racing finish with a 7th place result at the Lexington, OH round.

KTM will back their effort once again, but this time for the full season of Superbike racing. “We were very proud of what HMC and Chris accomplished in 2011, entering the highly competitive Superbike class in the middle of the season. We feel confident in our HMC program, Fillmore and the RC8 R that we will see even more success during the 2012 season,” remarked KTM Product Line Manager John Hinz.

Hansen is equally excited to return to racing, commenting, “We have been tied to the KTM brand for many years now and this level of racing is what we both have aimed for. We are proud to represent KTM and their Superbike at the national level and look forward to showing the U.S. market what the bike is capable of.”

Fillmore will compete aboard the KTM 1190 RC8 R Race Spec motorcycle. “I have been testing the RC8 since it first arrived in the states and the Race Spec bike is very competitive,” remarked Fillmore. “I am very excited to be racing in the Superbike class again and am looking forward to competing in a full season and improving on our success from last year.

The RC8 R Race Spec motorcycle was launched in the U.S. in 2011 as a new production model built specifically for competition use and returns again for 2012.

Sandro Cortese of the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 Team was fastest on the Valencia circuit for the third consecutive day in the first round of official tests for the new MotoGP class.

Cortese also managed to improve his lap times each day as teams running KTM and KTM-driven bikes continue to work hard on their pre-season preparations. “I had a very good feeling right from the first day to the end of tests and we improved a lot as we get the bike ready for the season. With KTM as the factory team we have a lot of support and I think I am in a better position than in previous years,” Cortese said at the conclusion of the training.

While there is still much work to be done before the opening MotoeGP in Qatar, it was nevertheless a positive outing for all five riders of the new KTM factory bike and the four riders on the KALEX-KTM-driven machine. They dominated fast lap times in the top ten and were all up among the top third of the field of 33 riders.

After last week’s preliminary tests and the three days at Valencia Aki Ajo, Team Manager of the Red Bull KTM Ajo nevertheless took the cautious approach saying he was “quite happy”. “Now we have had five full days of tests and we have had no technical problems. That is the most important. But we must remember that we are in the early states of our preparation. All the teams are just beginning and we will really have a better idea of where we stand after a month.”

Alex Baumgartel, constructor of the K KALEX-KTM bikes said the tests had been “very positive”. All our riders managed to improve their times over the three days and we were without any technical problems. We can say we’re in the ballpark. It’s been very positive for us.”

While weather for the first two days of tests was very cold, Friday was kinder for the teams. Cortese managed to put in a lap time fourth tenths faster than his best on Thursday to come away satisfied with his final day. Alberto Moncayo (KALEX-KTM), Danny Kent (KTM) and Luis Salom (KALEX-KTM) all reported a time of 1’41.2 to be third, fourth and fifth on the unofficial time list on Friday. Niklas Ajo (KTM), Hector Faubel (KALEX-KTM) were placed sixth and seventh, Zulfahmi Khairuddin (KTM) and Brad Binder (KALEX-KTM) were ninth and tenth and Australian Red Bull Rookies Cup graduate Arthur Sissis (KTM) finished thirteenth.
The next Moto3 ™ testing will begin next week in Jerez, Spain, where the Andalusian track will host three test days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

Unofficial Moto3 lap times Friday (recorded by teams):
1, Sandro Cortese, Germany Red Bull KTM Ajo, 1’40.9 (41 laps)
2. Maverick Vinales, Avintia Racing, 1’41.0 (66 laps)
3, Albert Moncayo, Spain, Aspar Team KALEX-KTM, 1’41.2 (56 laps)

Effective immediately Motonation is now responsible for the Canadian market for Sidi boots, AGV Sport apparel and Vemar helmets!

This is a great step for the Motonation “brand” and we intend on treating the Canadian market with the same intensity that we have applied to the USA market since 1999.

“It’s a great opportunity for Motonation and a great compliment by Sidi, Vemar and AGV Sport that they believe in us so much to let us handle that market,” says Motonation’s President; Bill Berroth. “I am very proud to have the opportunity. Motonation is passionate and dedicated to the Canadian effort and intends to do a great job with Sidi, AGV Sport and Vemar.”

Motonation’s limited distribution policy for the Sidi, AGV Sport and Vemar brands will mean that Canadian Partner dealers will enjoy a protected sales territory with greater margins than non-Partner retailers, even with the reduced retail prices that Motonation will introduce to the market for Sidi, AGV Sport and Vemar products. Sidi, AGV Sport and Vemar brand integrity will be assured via Motonation’s firm MAP policy.

Promotions will be expanded for Sidi, AGV Sport and Vemar as well. More riders will be on track than ever before, the advertising page count in print media will increase and Sidi’s, Vemar’s and AGV Sport’s brand presence on Canadian websites and social media will be intense!

Motonation will have its Canadian price list and dealer programs available at the upcoming Indy show. Dealers should plan on visiting us at booth #6115.

On Monday, February 5, Nicky Hayden underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on the right shoulder that he had injured in late December. During the procedure, which was carried out in Fremont, California, and which lasted approximately 40 minutes, Dr Arthur Ting discovered and repaired a tear in the labrum. Yesterday’s post-operation appointment confirmed that the surgery was successful, and the Ducati Team rider returned home to begin his recovery. If the convalescence proceeds as hoped, Hayden should be able to take part in the next winter test at Sepang, February 28-March 1.

“It’s a setback, but all things considered, I’m pretty happy with how things went,” Hayden said. “It’s good that it was possible to do everything by ’scope, and the pain’s not too bad. The problem should be fixed now, and I look forward to being able to help out the team as soon as possible.”

Why would you want to ride your Husaberg FE570 motorcycle to 20,500 vertical feet? Because it’d break a world record, of course!

That’s exactly what the trio of Walter Colebatch (UK), Lukas Matzinger (AUSTRIA) and Barton Churchill (USA) plan on doing this march! These three will attempt to reach new heights, literally, with their two-wheeled machines as they scratch and crawl their way up Ojos del Salado in South America. Why South America? The group explains.

“While the Andes are not as high as the Himalaya, that additional height is pretty much a moot point, since no-one is riding high enough to challenge the summits of the Andes, let alone the Himalaya. And the Andes have one huge advantage … the slopes of the mountains are often less steep.

“The clincher for us was studying the assorted videos and stories of the last two world records for cars. Both drives were in 2007, both were over 400 metres higher than any bike has ever gone, and one of the drives was in a near stock Jeep Wrangler. Importantly, both drives were on one particular mountain … Ojos del Salado … Eyes of Salt.”

So, this March, three riders will attempt to ride higher than anyone ever has. And what gear will they be wearing on their journey? KLIM, of course! And not just any KLIM gear, but the newest bad-boy in the lineup: the Badlands Pro Jacket and Pant.

“In our opinion this brand new product is probably the most versatile riding kit in the world. The adventure riding clothing market has been dominated by manufacturers who specialise in road riding gear, throwing a few more pockets on a kit and calling it an adventure suit. Most of the stuff has been of limited waterproofness or has become waterproof via the addition of additional waterproof layers. Klim has emerged as a specialist adventure gear manufacturer whose design team is actually made up of adventure riders. Therefore they are the only manufacturer who seems to be able to get the requirements of real adventure riders right. They make well vented all in one waterproof adventure kit. The Badlands Pro is a premium quality adventure suit that is positioned a level or two ABOVE the competition. But not only is it a great adventure suit, it’s a great road suit, and it’s a rally suit. The built in top drawer D30 armour on shoulders elbows back AND chest, combined with the guaranteed waterproofness of the suit, premium materials throughout, plus its incredible variety of pockets is why the UK’s top motorcycle publication, MCN, described it as being the only piece of motorcycle clothing you will ever need. We agree. It’s ideal for the altitude attempt and ideal for everything we do afterwards too. And it looks so cool, we will probably wear it on the plane out to Chile!”

(February 8, 2012) – Source Interlink Media, LLC. (SIM) announced today the launch of the Motor Trend YouTube Channel making original and compelling automotive content available to online audiences immediately. The Motor Trend Channel is part of YouTube’s rollout of around 100 new original content channels throughout the year.

The Motor Trend Channel’s programs have been developed to create content from the unique opportunities and insights offered by SIM’s large portfolio of automotive media brands, from Motor Trend to Hot Rod, Motorcyclist, Lowrider, FourWheeler, Dirt Rider, Car Craft, Automobile, Import Tuner and more. The programs cover first rides and drives and tests of the latest two- and four-wheeled machinery, as well as automotive lifestyle and documentary shows.

“We are really treating this like a TV channel,” said Source Interlink Media Chief Content Officer and Motor Trend Channel Executive Producer Angus MacKenzie. “Though a common thread is our focus on cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles and automotive culture, we are offering different content and a range of program formats. There’ll be something on the channel for everyone, regardless of their particular automotive passion.

“Automotive is an extremely popular category on YouTube,” said Alex Carloss, head of original programming at YouTube. “We’re excited to bring a company like Motor Trend to our platform where millions of fans around the world can tune in and watch some of their favorite Motor Trend content.”

“One of the most exciting things about this new initiative – and what separates it from linear or traditional TV – is how interactive Internet television is,” MacKenzie added. “These new channels are very social-media driven. We can immediately communicate with our viewers for instantaneous feedback on what they do and don’t like, and what they’d like to see more of.”

A full schedule of programming that includes eight separate shows is expected to be uploaded and available by February 17. New videos from each of the shows will be posted on a varying schedule, but there will be new content available every day, Monday to Friday.
Motor Trend’s new programming will be produced by Michael Suggett and Julia Sanchez with MacKenzie serving as Executive Producer. Jim Gleason will assume the role of Creative Manager.

“After six years of building our own channel, which counts more than 147 million video views and 153,000 subscribers, we’re incredibly excited at what this new development will bring,” said MacKenzie. “This was the next logical step for SIM as it continues its transformation from a legacy magazine publishing business to a media-neutral content creation company. The channels and content provided by Motor Trend and others under YouTube’s initiative represent a paradigm shift for how enthusiasts watch and consume video online.”
